Being a young leader herself, Anna
Oposa certainly inspires both the youth and the elders. Basically,
she has an appeal to everyone. It is amazing how a 25-years old lady
carry around so much passion and invigoration with her that she
wholeheartedly radiates to the world.
Last Friday, February 7, 2014, Anna
Oposa gave a lecture about the importance of taking care of our
marine biodiversity. She shows that there is so much to be done and
there's a lot that we can do about it. She graduated with a BA
English Studies degree, she doesn't have much background with marine
biology when she started her cause but look at where she is right
now. She is a living example of living with passion and actually
doing something about it and with that she inspires me so much. Yes,
it just took her one and a half hours to spark up my intuition.
Ms. Anna Oposa is a co-founder of Save
Philippine Seas which is an organized movement which goal is to protect the
marine resources of the Philippines by utilizing the social media and
enforcement of the environmental laws. With her lecture, she opened
up my eyes to the depths of the Philippines' ocean floor. We as
inhabitants of this archipelago should dig deeper than the surface of
the water because that is where three-fourths of life is and there is
a lot happening deep within that we should take note of. I think she
made a great point when she said that we are so focus on the life at
land that we take for granted what's in the waters when in fact the
world is three-fourths water and that the country where we live in is
completely surrounded with water. It made so much sense. Taking care
of the seas should not stop with cleaning the trash that we can see on
it's surface because there is so much more deep down and we should
not take it for granted because that's where most of this world is
and if only we are optimizing the potential of the seas then we can
sustainably support our lives in the land. We can get so much from it
if only we are not selfish greedy beings and if we actually take time to
listen to the waves, then we can learn how to do things properly
Moreover, she also mentioned how
powerful social media has been and that instead of just posting about
our lunch we should harness its potential for greater cause and
that's what she has been doing. Social media is indeed an influential
flat form to send our message across, it is a venue for us to listen
and be heard so why not maximize its use to imply good change for the
betterment of our society. Especially nowadays that everyone is on
it, more importantly, the youth sector is so into it and these are the
changemakers that we should tap to lead our society to a brighter
future.
I learned a lot about marine
biodiversity specifically in Philippine context but it's more than that. I learned a lot about taking a stand and fighting for it. That
we should not be confined with the apathetic apartheid that is
emergent in our society these days.
The world has given us so much, without
it we will be nowhere- now that it needs us, this is the perfect
opportunity for us to give what we should.
