Everything Wet

“If we look after the ocean, the ocean will look after us.”
- Anna Oposa

“Marine Conversations” was a lecture given by Ms. Anna Oposa that focused on things underwater. According to her, fifty to ninety of all life on earth is found on water and that the Philippines is the center of the center of the world’s marine bio diversity. In fact, five species of marine turtles are found in our country’s water.

The discussion also tackled how bodies of water are destroyed and the living things in it are harmed. Aside from natural calamities like typhoon Yolanda that caused several damages in different parts of both Philippines’ land and water, most of the destruction of marine biodiversity is caused by human activities. Just like the dynamite fishing that actually kills not only the fishes but also shatter their homes, the corals. The plastics that we throw in bodies of water are sometimes eaten by marine animals that lead to indigestion and at times to their death. Furthermore, garbage pollutes the water. Also, in a year, 70-100 million sharks are killed for their fins.

There are things that only water, salt or fresh, can provide us. Since we are the ones who need them more and the ones who benefit from them, we should take responsibility and care of these bodies of water.
