The Beginning

I was always curious about how the universe was created. Some would say that God created the universe and some would say that the universe started with a “Big Bang.” I don’t know which one is true but I guess if you are a man of science you would believe the Big Bang Theory and if you are a man of religion you would believe that God created the universe.

I recently watched an episode of the show Curiosity in Discovery Channel entitled “Did God Create the Universe” and I was quite amazed at how Stephen Hawking shared his insights about the topic. It was very convincing but at the same time disturbing because it felt like it could be offending to people who are very religious.

It is quite logical that people from the past would use gods to explain natural events such as an eclipse, an earthquake, a storm, and other natural phenomena because they had no concept of science. As time passed by, people started to observe nature and started to explain things with the use of science. The laws of nature were then discovered and this led to questions such as “Do we need a God to explain the universe?” The discovery of these laws was so powerful that Pope John XXI decreed them as heresy.

Scientists developed the “Big Bang Theory” to explain how the universe was created, but the question is, what triggered the Big Bang? Some would say that it was God who triggered it, but scientists are not content with this answer. They say that nothing caused the Big Bang. Their explanation lies in the theories of Einstein on how time and space are related. Something wonderful happened after the Big Bang: time itself began.

Time was created after the Big Bang and we can say that there was no before the Big Bang. Nothing could have caused the Big Bang because there was no time for something to exist. I am not forcing anyone to believe in what I said because we have our own beliefs and we all know that science and religion have different explanations and insights about something – it is just of matter of which theory you choose to believe.
