Unusual migrations

On the 27th of December 2013, dolphins were spotted in Brooke's Point, Palawan. Brooke's Point is a municipality located in southern Palawan, almost 200 kilometers from Puerto Princesa, the province's capital. Days after Christmas, my cousins and I went out on fishing boats to explore the waters just off the coast of Brooke's and to look at the island from the sea. While we were joking around the waters splashing around the boat, we saw fins surfacing the water. We were surprised since it would be the first time that we hear, or actually see, dolphins in the area. In the years I have been spending Christmases over in Brooke's, it's only been now that we see such animals in the area. Even the boatman was surprised and excited to see them. There were two groups coming from the right side and left side of our boat that eventually joined into one big group headed out for the open water.

Dolphins are rarely seen in the waters near Brooke's. Probably because of the population living just along the shores. One of the possible reasons why they are in the waters of Brooke's is the cold waters in seas north west of Palawan. The boatman said, "Ngayon lang kami nakakita ng ganyan dito." The dropping temperatures brought about by our changing environments is probably one of the reasons animals are migrating to different areas and habitats they've never been to before. "Climate change appears to be forcing many of the world's creatures to migrate to more favorable locales up to three times faster than previously believed..." (Discovery News, 2011) Some researches showed that global warming pushes various species out of their original locations towards either poles and to higher elevations. Experts claim that the movement of these species from one location to another may either be the cause of their extinction or their survival. "There will be some winners as well as many losers." (Thomas, Discovery News, 2011)
